on December 2019, a technical session entitled “Migration toward IP/MPLS networks in power utilities-demands and trends” was held by Monenco Iran on behald of Information Systems and Telecommunication study committee (SC D2) in the 34th International Power System Conference and 14th International Conference on Protection and Automation of Power Systems. In this session Mr Vahid Veysi from Monenco Iran started with short description of IEC 61850 reference model. Then different power utility services and their associated quality of service requirements was introduced. Furthermore, Mr. Veysi discussed current TDM-based communication infrastructure of power utilities and its problems and challenges to responding future demands of power industry. These set of problems and shortages in current TDM-based communication networks like SDH, has motivated power industry to seek modern alternatives like IP/MPLS-based networks. Migration trends from TDM-based communication infrastructures to IP/MPLS ones was among other topics that was discussed in this session. Also relevant case studies and CIGRE papers about migration toward IP/MPLS networks were reviewed. Finally technical and non-technical factors which shall be evaluated in order to decide about which technology could benefit power industry, were introduced. The session finished with questions and answers.
